To accurately value your item, all facets of the piece must be individually appraised and compared against market demand and trends. Using the latest technology, Symmetry uses both acid and electronic testing, weight analysis and gem identification processes.
A typical valuation follows the following process:
1. Purpose of the appraisal
The purpose of the appraisal is identified by the client (e.g. Insurance purposes, deceased estate etc. See What We Do )
2. Metal Tests
The metal of the object is tested using acid or electronic methods. This test determines the caratage of the jewellery e.g. 9ct, 14ct, 18ct.
3. Gemstone Identification
The gemstone is identified and can range from analysis through a x10 loupe (eyeglass) or to a more complex appraisal through microscope analysis, ultra violet light testing or refractive index analysis etc.
4. Quality Analysis
A grading of gemstone is achieved through analysis of colour, cut and clarity.
5. Size Analysis
The gemstone is measured and its approximate weight calculated.
6. Manufacture Identification
Identify the manufacture of the item of jewellery e.g. cast handmade or combination.
7. Identify the type of settings & quantity
Each component of the piece (e.g. Price of mount, settings & gemstones) are given a price and then added together to form the valued price for the purpose stated by the client.
8. Valuation Report
A valuation is then reported with a high definition photography on an appraisal certificate.
